5-year-old boy dies after car slams into tree

AUBURN, Wash. - Three people are in critical condition Sunday morning after their car slammed into a tree off Auburn Way South shortly after 2:30 a.m..

An 8-year-old girl was able to escape the car, while firefighters worked to free the trapped driver and a 5-year-old boy from the wreckage. Police say they do not believe the children were restrained.

According to police, the 21-year-old driver is the boyfriend to the mother of the children that were in the car. All three occupants were taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

While speed and alcohol are believed to have factored in the crash, there was also a dense fog in the area, police say.
